ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify factors predicting behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in persons with dementia. Factors including the patient, caregiver, and environment based on the multi-dimensional behavioral model were tested. METHODS: The subjects of the study were 139 pairs of persons with dementia and their caregivers selected from four geriatric long-term care facilities located in S city, G province, Korea. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, inverse normal transformations, Pearson correlation coefficients, Spearman's correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression with the SPSS Statistics 22.0 for Windows program. RESULTS: Mean score for BPSD was 40.16. Depression (β=.42, p<.001), exposure to noise in the evening noise (β=−.20, p=.014), and gender (β=.17, p=.042) were factors predicting BPSD in long-term care facilities, which explained 25.2% of the variance in the model. CONCLUSION: To decrease BPSD in persons with dementia, integrated nursing interventions should consider factors of the patient, caregiver, and environment.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the effects of a support group intervention on the burden of primary family caregivers of stroke patients. METHOD: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. The subjects were 36 primary family caregivers of stroke patients [experimental(N=18) and control(N=18) groups] in a neurosurgery ward of a university hospital. The experimental group members participated in six sessions of a support group intervention for two weeks and the degree of their caregiving burden was evaluated. Data was analyzed by Chi-square tests, t-tests, and paired t-tests using SPSS 10.0. RESULT: The experimental group had a significantly lower total burden score (t=2.061, p= .047)and sub-scales of emotional(t=-3.319, p= .002), time-dependent(t=-2.045, p= .049) and developmental(t=-2.656, p= .012) burden scores than the control group, while no significant differences were found in physical, social or financial burden scores between the two groups. Within the experimental group, there was a significant decrease in physical(t=2.507, p= .023), emotional(t=4.754, p= .000), social(t=2.932, p= .009), time- dependent(t=5.015, p= .000) and developmental(t=7.541, p= .000) burden scores but not the financial burden score. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that a support group intervention can be utilized as an effective nursing program to reduce the burden of primary family caregivers of stroke patients.

ABSTRACT

Chondroid syringoma is referred as mixed tumor because it has epithelial structure and mesenchymal elements. Mixed tumors could be divided into two distinct types, eccrine and apocrine. Mixed tumor with follicular, sebaceous and apocrine differentiation is considered as an expression of the common embryologic origin of elements of the folliculosebaceous-apocrine unit. A 32-year old manpresented with an asymptomatic firm erythematous nodule on the left cheek. Histologically, it showed typical features of chondroid syringoma with tubules exhibiting branching and cystic dilatation in the myxoid and chondroid stroma. Our case is unique in that the tumor arose from follicular infundibulum with follicular, sebacesous and apocrine differentiation.

ABSTRACT

A 70-year-old man presented with an asymptomatic 1.5 x 2.5 cm sized lobulated mass with central ulcer on the scrotum. Histologically, it showed a well-circumscribed tumor composed of solid portions with fusiform basophilic cells and clear round cells, cystic spaces and tubular lumina, which were consistent with clear cell hidradenoma. Our case is unique in that the tumor developed on the scrotum, an unusual site.

ABSTRACT

Acquired perforating dermatosis is a perforating disorder associated with diabetic mellitus or renal failure, which is characterized by transepidermal elimination of altered collagen and by its occurrence in adult life. We present a case of acquired perforating dermatosis associated with hepatocellular carcinoma and diabetic nephropathy, who had multiple pruritic brownish papules and nodules on trunk and extremities for 2 months. Histological findings showed transepidermal channel containing fragmented collagen and elastic fibers. The skin lesions were disappeared one month after hepatic lobetomy. It indicates that hepatocellular carcinoma can be one of the etiological factors in the development of acquired perforating dermatosis.
